For millions of devotees across the globe from the lush hills of Tamil Nadu to the bustling streets of Singapore and Malaysia

Lord Murugan (Karthikeyan)

Murugan is not just a mythological figure but a living presence who guides them through life's battles.
This comprehensive guide explores the deep-rooted history, sacred abodes, and spiritual benefits of worshipping Lord Murugan in 2026.

Who is Lord Murugan?
Lord Murugan is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, and the younger brother of the elephant headed Lord Ganesha
He is the supreme commander-in-chief of the Devas (celestial army), created specifically to restore cosmic balance by defeating the forces of darkness.
His appearance is striking and full of symbolism. Usually depicted as an eternally youthful man with a radiant complexion, he often carries the Vel (divine spear), his primary weapon which represents sharp intelligence and spiritual insight.
He rides a peacock (Paravani), a bird that represents the conquest over ego and vanity, and his flag bears the emblem of a rooster, signaling the dawn of knowledge.

The Many Names of Murugan
Lord Murugan is known by a staggering 108 names, each reflecting a specific quality or legend:
    • Kartikeya: The son of the Krittika stars who raised him.
    • Kanda: Meaning "the one who has leaped forth," referring to his miraculous birth.
    • Subramanya: The one who is dear to Brahma and excels in wisdom.
    • Shanmukha or Arumugan: The "Six-Faced Lord".
    • Velan: The wielder of the Vel.
    • Kumara: The eternal youth.
    • Swaminatha: The one who taught even his father, Lord Shiva.

History and Miraculous Origin
The history of Lord Murugan is found in the Kanda Puranam, the largest of the Hindu Puranas, as well as in ancient
Tamil Sangam literature
 dating back over 2,000 years.

The Birth of a Warrior
The legend begins with a powerful demon named Surapadman (and his brothers Tarakasura and Simhamukha), who obtained a boon that he could only be killed by a son of Lord Shiva.
At the time, Shiva was in deep meditation and had no children. Fearing the demon's growing tyranny, the gods appealed to Shiva for help.
From Shiva’s third eye, six divine sparks emerged. These sparks were so intense that the fire god, Agni, and the wind god, Vayu, had to carry them to the holy river Ganga
Ganga eventually deposited them in Lake Saravana, where the sparks transformed into six beautiful babies lying on lotus flowers.
Six goddesses known as the Krittika stars (Pleiades) descended to nurture these infants.
When Goddess Parvati later hugged the six children together, they merged into one divine form with six heads and twelve arms—thus, Murugan was born.
The Victory over Evil
As a young boy, Murugan was appointed the general of the divine army. Armed with the Vel given to him by his mother, Parvati, he led a fierce battle against the demons. In the final encounter at Tiruchendur, Murugan defeated Surapadman.
In an act of divine mercy, instead of destroying the demon, Murugan split him into two halves: one half became a peacock (his vehicle), and the other half became a rooster (the emblem on his banner).
