Long ago, there was a powerful asura named Bhasmasura . He was not satisfied with ordinary strength. He wanted unlimited power and believed that only severe penance could give it to him. So Bhasmasura went deep into the forests and began intense penance. He stood in heat and rain, day after day, year after year, without rest. His penance was so severe that it disturbed the balance of the world. Finally, Lord Shiva appeared before him.
