Ayyappan Story – A Simple Devotional Tale
Long ago, there was a powerful asura named Bhasmasura . He was not satisfied with ordinary strength. He wanted unlimited power and believed that only severe penance could give it to him. So Bhasmasura went deep into the forests and began intense penance. He stood in heat and rain, day after day, year after year, without rest. His penance was so severe that it disturbed the balance of the world. Finally, Lord Shiva appeared before him. The Dangerous Boon Lord Shiva asked, “What do you want?” Without hesitation, Bhasmasura said, “ Grant me a boon that whoever I touch on the head should instantly turn to ashes .” Bound by the rules of penance, Lord Shiva granted the boon. At first, Bhasmasura was thrilled. But soon, his ego took over. He began misusing his power and creating fear everywhere. Blinded by pride, he even tried to test his power on Lord Shiva himself.
